A new study has revealed two new medicines which may have a positive effect on erectile dysfunction (ED) and may also be effective in treating pulmonary hypertension, the first study in the UK found.
The drug tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis and Viagra, which works by increasing blood flow to the penis, was shown in two separate studies to be effective in the treatment of ED.
The research was published in the new journal,Pharmacogenetics.
A total of 277 patients who have been asked to complete a questionnaire regarding their sexual function tests at the University of Manchester between November 1998 and June 2003 were included in the study. They were randomly assigned to receive either the drug or the placebo pill. This was done to determine the effects of the drug on their ability to achieve and maintain an erection. This was followed by the observation that when a man was sexually aroused, the drug did not significantly increase his ability to obtain an erection, but only increased his ability to keep an erection firm.
Patients in the drug group reported significantly higher scores on the Sexual Performance and Quality of Life (SQOL) scale than those in the placebo group. The results were statistically significant, with the SQOL score being 25 out of 100 in the drug group and 12 out of 100 in the placebo group.
Patients who were taking the drug for a shorter period of time (6 months or more) reported a statistically significantly greater increase in their ability to achieve an erection than those taking the placebo pill.
The researchers also noted that men taking Cialis had a lower incidence of a clinically significant erection problem than those taking the placebo.
The two medicines were both tested in the same way as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, and showed no clinically significant effects in the treatment of ED.
Both medicines were associated with a significantly lower frequency of adverse events (AEs).
Cialis, the brand name for the drug tadalafil, is available in 100mg, 150mg, and 200mg tablets, and Viagra is available in 100mg, 150mg and 200mg pills.

It contains the active ingredient tadalafil, which is a type of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. Cialis works by helping to increase blood flow into the penis, which helps men to get and keep an erection. The medication is available in 20mg, 30mg, and 80mg doses, and can be taken on demand to help men with ED get an erection.
